Emita region — Island History & Sheltered Bays

From Whitemark travel north take the turn off to Sawyers Bay around 10mins drive. Park on the hill and walk north or south to sheltered bays. Look south and you will see the soaring peak of Mt. Strzelecki or keep your eyes to the sand and search for shells. Back to the main road continuing north slow down at the top of Pickford Hill and as  you start to decline keep a lookout on the left for a nice spot to stop and take in the view of Marshall Bay.

Continue down hill and turn off to Settlement point from here Emita beach is a short  drive with a picnic table overlooking the beach it is the ideal spot for morning tea.

Head back to the main gravel road and continue on to the grass car park just before Allports Beach where you can follow the walking track to Castle Rock, allow 2 hours on an outgoing tide is recommended. For the less energetic drive a little further to Allports beach throw down a towel or just lay in the soft clean sand and listen to the water lapping on the sand. Take a packed lunch or something from the butcher to cook on the free gas BBQ nestled in the dunes at Allports.

From Allports head west to Wybalenna Chapel and Cemetery, feel the eerie isolation and stillness as you walk around this historical area. Take the next left down to Lillies bay and stop for a beach walk, go snorkeling or look for marine life around the rocks as the tide goes out.  Call in to the Mutton Bird Viewing platform at Settlement point and try your hand at some fishing from Port Davies for Snook or Blue Wrasse with pilchards or squid on an incoming tide is recommended. Flinders Island Dive charters operate out of Port Davies organize a cruise a few days in advance

Last stop the Furneaux Museum open from 1to 4pm weekends during winter and every afternoon from Xmas to Easter it tells the tale of the Islands history and has an extensive collection of exhibits.
