Can I drive on unsealed gravel roads?

Flinders Island Car Rentals vehicles are permitted on public two lane unsealed gravel roads provided that they are properly formed and NOT 4WD sand or dirt one lane tracks. Off road driving is not permitted.

Care should be taken on all roads but especially unsealed roads as the loose gravel can become slippery particularly along the edges, please observe the 80 kilometers per hour speed limit on gravel roads.

Be aware there are some roads on the map provided are not able to be accessed with a rental vehicle. These will be identified at the time of collection.

When I arrive at the Airport where do I pick up my car from and what do I need to present to staff?

We will meet you at our check-in desk, it’s just inside the Airport terminal.

All drivers need to be present at initial sign up and hold a current drivers license, overseas licenses are permitted.

Along with the license, you will need to bring a form of payment e.g. credit card, payments are processed on return of your rental vehicle. If your booking was made via an agent, have your travel documents or vouchers ready to show staff.

Underage Drivers

You and any person driving the vehicle must be 21 years of age or over (unless approved by FICR) and must hold and present a current drivers license, or a learner’s permit that has been held for at least twelve consecutive months. You must be accompanied by a fully licensed driver at all times, and satisfy any other conditions on the Rental Agreement.

What if I would like to keep the vehicle longer than I booked it for? or I'm running late returning it on time?

Provided the vehicle has not been reserved for another customer we are happy to extend your hire, please call to extend your hire in advance, or advise staff of your expected arrival time.
All rental charges are based on 24 hour periods, rentals longer than the allocated period will incur additional days charges, along with any extras like car seats or eskies. A grace period of 2 hours is allowed, after which time extra charges apply.

Opening hours, Sunday or public holiday arrivals

Our office operating hours are 7 am to 10 pm, seven days per week. We can provide pickups and drop-offs at all locations during the hours of 7 am to 7 pm. If you book online and are arriving at another location besides the Flinders Island Airport we will be in touch with you prior to your arrival to arrange hire car collection.

If you are arriving on a Sunday afternoon or public holiday keep in mind Flinders Island is a small community with limited opening hours for shopping and places to eat out on these days. If you would like to pre-order any supplies for us to collect and place in your hire car we are more than happy to assist, you can contact the following local businesses:
Walkers Supermarket (6359 2010) open until 5.30pm weekdays, 9 til 12.00pm on Saturday and closed Sunday
Flinders Island Meats (6359 2005) open weekdays

For an evening meal on a Sunday book in at the Lady Barron the Furneaux Tavern (6359 3521). The Lady Barron Store is open seven days and most public holidays (Sunday until 3 pm) for fuel, groceries and great coffee.

What to do in the event of a bingle, flat battery or breakdown?

In the event of an accident or breakdown, contact the Flinders Island Car Rentals on the numbers located on the business card in the centre console.

We request you report accidents immediately, at least within 24 hours to Flinders Island Car Rentals as per the Terms and Conditions of the Rental Agreement.

You are responsible for the limit of the liability stated in your Rental Agreement, no matter who’s at fault, tyre damage will be charged pro rata to the measurement of the tread. Fair and wear and tear is considered to be deterioration in the condition of the vehicle with careful consistent use, for example, stone chips.

For your driving comfort and safety we recommend

  • Observing all road rules and speed limits, ensuring all passengers buckle up
  • Adjusting your mirrors and seat to suit you before commencing your journey
  • Pulling off the road to take photos and enjoy the scenery
  • Reducing your speed at dawn and dusk and keeping a look out for wildlife will ensure you and our island animals all make in home safely
  • WAVING at passing motorists, remember slow down your on island time.

Nightlife on the Island

Flinders Island Car Rentals recommends reducing speed at dawn and dusk and keeping a look out for wildlife. Our vehicles are fitted with nudge bars and in the event of an encounter with wildlife, please remain calm, use the brakes lightly and maintain your vehicle on the road.

Can I pick up or return the rental vehicle to other locations besides Flinders Island Airport?

Absolutely, Flinders Island Car Rentals vehicles can be relocated if arrangements are made with rental staff. Relocation fees apply to do so and vary depending on the location.

  • $35 one way fee for delivery or pick up to and from Lady Barron
  • $50 one way fee for delivery or pick up to and from Killiecrankie
  • $35 one way fee for delivery or pick up to and from Trousers Point / Mountain Seas

Travelling with Children or pets?

Flinders Island Car Rentals has Safe and Sound 0 – 4yrs child seats and boosters seats available to hire.

Yes we do allow domestic pets to ride in vehicles.  Although we do not charge an extra fee for pets, pet owners will incur an additional charge for any damage caused by animals, or any special cleaning required as a result of shedding or accidents.  A blanket can be supplied for rear seats or for station wagons for your pets comfort.

Cancellation Policy

  • More than 14 days prior to arrival – No fee applicable
  • Within 14 days of hire – 30% of the total rental cost
  • Less than 7 days- 100% of the total rental cost

If the vehicle is returned early for any reason, no refund will be given.

Vehicle returned not full of fuel?

All vehicles are full of petrol on your arrival and are to be left full on departure unless prior arrangements are made. A $10 refuelling fee will be charged on vehicles not returned full.

(Note: Fuel is available in Whitemark 24/7 and NOT in Lady Barron after 2 pm on Sundays)

Will I need a National Parks Pass for my vehicle?

Parks Passes are required for vehicles entering Mt Strzelecki National Park on Flinders Island, a $41.20 pass will cover your vehicle for the duration of your stay. Tasmanian visitors with an All Parks Pass card please bring it with you and place it on the dash of your hire car to gain access to our National Park.
