Unavale Vineyards, Flinders Island

Tuesday, April 19th, 2011

On Sunday 17th April 2011 Bev and Roger Watson held there annual grape picking day were they ask people from the community and visiting tourist to come and help them pick all the ripe grapes to make their award winning Unavale Wine.

The picking started at 9.30 in the morning and by 4.30 that night they had picked all the grapes. There were a large number of wasps buzzing round the grapes, so a few people were stung. One local lady was stung on the finger and as it swelled her ring became stuck, luckily Nurse Bev (Bev Watson) came to the rescue and managed to get the ring off with a piece of rope. One local man had the worst luck when he was stung on the hand just as they had finished for the day.

When everyone arrived back at the bottom house near the vineyards and local band Ratstars played the entertainment for the evening. Bev and Rogers’s son in-law fired up the BBQ and cooked everyone mutton birds caught from the outer islands and wallaby schnitzel, the wallaby came from the local butchery and would have been caught on the island. Bev and Roger also had a keg of beer and wine, free for everyone to enjoy. The fire was lit as a chill come over the air in the afternoon and everyone enjoyed sitting around the roaring fire eating juicy, fat mutton birds and listening to feet taping music.

In all the whole day was fantastic, Roger thanked everyone for their help and gave out free bottles of wine to those who had worked all day picking the grapes.

If you are on the island and would like to do a tour of Unavale Vineyard, please contact Bev or Roger Watson on 6359 3632. Bev and Roger also own the Furneaux Tavern in Lady Barron so pop in for a restaurant meal, bar meal or takeaway, they are open everyday. You can contact the Furneaux Tavern on 6359 3521 and find out more about the Unavale Wines
