Patriarch Inlet Flinders Island
Monday, December 12th, 2011Walk number 5 in the ‘Walks of Flinders Island’ book is the Patriarch Inlet walk.
A desolate but beautiful part of the coastline can be found at Patriarch Inlet. A kilometre before the beach you will notice a small car parking area on the left which has views over the inlet as well as a tourist information sign. From this point a short trek can be made out to the coast along the banks of the inlet. A more interesting walk which must be done at low tide is to trek up the bank of the inlet in a westerly direction and after about half a kilometre you should be able to see some white ‘mounds’ towards the northwest. Here lie the remains of a stranded pod of about 80 pilot whales, which beached here in 1979! A trip to the Emita Museum is mandatory, particularly after visiting this site. At the museum you will be able to see the actual newspaper article which recorded this event all those years ago. Watch out for the gooey and sticky mud flats as you make your way carefully across the inlet for a closer inspection of the skeletons. The former Flinders Island lodge has one of these mammals on display. It is amazing to think that these mammals came to be so far inland – well over a kilometre from the coast. A walk out to the east coast beach is relatively straight forward, whether by road or around the shores of the inlet.
This walk is 2-3KM and takes around 1 Hour.
Elvstan Cottages
Thursday, December 16th, 2010Elvstan Cottages provide self contained Cottage accommodation in Whitemark, Flinders Island. The two bedroom cottages are just across the road from the beach allowing you to enjoy sea views in a quiet location on the edge of Town.
Situated on The Esplanade just around the corner from the main street of Whitemark, the cottages are a short walk from the shops, the pub, coffee shop and bakery.
The two, two bedroom self contained cottages have all you need for your Island holiday for either a couple, two couples, or a family. Each sleeps up to five, with a double bed, two singles and one single in the sunroom. A fully equipped kitchen allows you to cook for yourselves while continental breakfast provisions and tea and coffee are included. For relaxation, a TV with Video and DVD, CD player and radio are provided. A well stocked book shelf gives an insight into island life and a few novels for those lazy days on the beach or cool winter nights in front of the cosy wood heater. Make use of the picnic items provided to get out and explore the beautiful scenery and beaches of Flinders Island. Or you can sit back and watch the ever changing play of light on the water and sky. Watching the sunset over the off shore islands of East Kangaroo, Chalky and Prime Seal is one of the pleasures of a stay at Elvstan Cottages.
Guests are encouraged to call in to Bowmans Shop to pick up the keys and be escorted to their Cottage by the Owner, a third generation islander.

 Sawyers Bay Coastal Property
Imagine owning a property that enjoys a frontage of approximately 1.5 kilometres to beautiful sandy, safe swimming beaches with spectacular lichen covered granite rock formations.
Well imagine no more, here is your chance.
This beachfront property of 217 acres (appoximately) offers a lifestyle opportunity plus income potential from livestock grazing.
The homestead offers 3 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, office and living areas, with other fixed improvements including a 4 bay machinery shed and as new cattle yards.
Approximately 160 acres of the property is sown to pasture with the balance being native bush and shelter, being ideally suited to a beef fattening operation. Stock water is provided from spring fed and run off dams plus Pickford Creek runs through the property.
Located just 10 minutes drive from the main township of Whitemark and 5 minutes from the airport, this desirable property would suit those looking for a coastal lifestyle opportunity with income potential. There is plenty of room to construct your own private airstrip or helipad is desired (STCA).
Inspection is sure to impress, so if you are looking for a coastal property with the ability to run livestock, don’t miss this one. You will more than likely find a paper nautilus shell washed up on the beach or catch a flathead for dinner before you go around the stock.
