Volunteer Ambulance Cabaret Flinders Is

Friday, October 21st, 2011

On Saturday the 15th of October the majority of Flinders Island residence and visitors were getting themselves ready for the annual Flinders Island Volunteer Ambulance Cabaret. The theme for this years cabaret was ‘School Days’, the theme is to coincide with the centenary celebration of the school.

The normal thing to do on cabaret night is to get dressed up in your outrageous costume at yours or a friends house where you may drink a bottle of wine or two and then meet at the local pub (Interstate Hotel) for a few more beverages. After a few hours the pub will start flickering the lights in the bar and that’s our (the locals) cue to get out and start moving down the street to the entertainment centre.

This year the entertainment centre was decorated with lots of balloons and paper table clothes on the tables. There was a small assortment of crayons and pencils on the table, so naturally we decided to write inappropriate and silly comments on the tables because as you know that’s what we did most of the time at school while we where supposed to be working. ha ha!

Local band Nautilaus played for everyone entertainment and we all danced on late into the night. Drinks were flowing and people were laughing and having a fantastic night.

All in all it was a great night and i hope all who attended had lots of fun. We should all say a big thank you to the volunteers of the ambulance service who continue to help other when in need and expect nothing in return. You all organised a fantastic night every year and for that i say thank you!!

Show Time Flinders Island

The Flinders Island Show is only 1 week away!

I’m sure you all have been busy making and baking  things to enter in the show and the children at the school have been hard at work preparing fantastic artwork to be on display in the show pavilion. I hope you all have your costumes ready for the grand parade at 12noon on the day. Remember the theme this year is all about the school, so dress up in all your schools colours and proudly wear them in the grand parade!

I can’t wait to see all the things on offer and I hope to see you all there!!!

Thankyou Flinders Island

Hi Everybody,

I’d just like to say a big thank you to everyone that turned up and donated goods on Saturday for the Music Trivia Night – a Fundraiser for Shannon at the Sports and RSL Club, and the Ratstars for organising this event, all money raised on the night will be donated to Shannon Barrett to go towards his physio sessions up in Sydney.

Shannon had a car accident some years ago which left him in a wheelchair. As Shannon is a Flinders Islander, the whole community got together to raise money for him so he could pay for his physio sessions up in Sydney and many other things.

Saturday night,  the community managed to raise a total of $3419.80! If you include this with the group of islanders that raised money from the Pub to Pub, we have raised about $8000 as a community for Shannon. It is amazing that such a small community ( about 700 people ) could have such big hearts and raise so much money for such an amazing young man.

I am proud to call myself a Flinders Islander and i hope you all are too.

Unavale Vineyards, Flinders Island

Tuesday, April 19th, 2011

On Sunday 17th April 2011 Bev and Roger Watson held there annual grape picking day were they ask people from the community and visiting tourist to come and help them pick all the ripe grapes to make their award winning Unavale Wine.

The picking started at 9.30 in the morning and by 4.30 that night they had picked all the grapes. There were a large number of wasps buzzing round the grapes, so a few people were stung. One local lady was stung on the finger and as it swelled her ring became stuck, luckily Nurse Bev (Bev Watson) came to the rescue and managed to get the ring off with a piece of rope. One local man had the worst luck when he was stung on the hand just as they had finished for the day.

When everyone arrived back at the bottom house near the vineyards and local band Ratstars played the entertainment for the evening. Bev and Rogers’s son in-law fired up the BBQ and cooked everyone mutton birds caught from the outer islands and wallaby schnitzel, the wallaby came from the local butchery and would have been caught on the island. Bev and Roger also had a keg of beer and wine, free for everyone to enjoy. The fire was lit as a chill come over the air in the afternoon and everyone enjoyed sitting around the roaring fire eating juicy, fat mutton birds and listening to feet taping music.

In all the whole day was fantastic, Roger thanked everyone for their help and gave out free bottles of wine to those who had worked all day picking the grapes.

If you are on the island and would like to do a tour of Unavale Vineyard, please contact Bev or Roger Watson on 6359 3632. Bev and Roger also own the Furneaux Tavern in Lady Barron so pop in for a restaurant meal, bar meal or takeaway, they are open everyday. You can contact the Furneaux Tavern on 6359 3521 and find out more about the Unavale Wines
