The 1999 Ford Laser Sedan or laser one for short was one of the first new additions to the Flinders Island Car Rentals fleet of 10 hire cars that were purchased from the original owners David and Anne Campbell back in 2005. After much searching around Launceston for a small sedan to join the fleet Justin finally found the little white laser in a car yard, it had spent the last couple of years in Devonport so it was used to the sea breeze and would fit right in to the hire car fleet at Flinders Island Car Rentals.
Over the years it has done many kilometres around the island ferrying business people to meetings and appointments and tourists to every beach and lookout on offer. It’s a fairy responsive little car considering the 1.6 litre engine and offers excellent fuel economy for visitors that wish to explore every inch of Flinders Island by road, some roads multiple times. As it’s a manual the laser is a real drivers car giving you a feeling of control as you navigate some of the gravel roads around the island. With fully adjustable front seats and folding rear seats the laser can be tailored to meet the needs of any driver and any holiday pursuit, with room for a small esky or set of fishing rods.
The laser has some interesting tales to tell, on it’s very first hire the couple on holiday decided to visit the Whitemark Bakery for lunch and parked a little close to curb, breaking the wheel trim and damaging the hirers’ pride more than the hire car. This summer will be the last summer for the Laser as a hire car, it will be retired after Easter and go on to lead a less exciting life as a regular car on Flinders Island.
