The Flinders Island Clean Green Airport Shuttle has been made possible with $64,943.20 of assistance from the Renewable Energy Fund 2011 – King and Flinders Islands (Department of Infrastructure, Energy and Resources in Tasmania ). The project aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and reliance on diesel generated electricity on the Bass Strait Islands by utilizing renewable energy technology innovation.

The electric vehicle a Mitsubishi i-MiEV (Mitsubishi Innovative Electric Vehicle) is the first of its type in the State and is utilized by Flinders Island Car Rentals; to provide an Airport Shuttle service to and from Flinders Island Airport and Whitemark, a pollution free transport option for residents and visitors to Flinders Island . With zero emissions it is an environmentally friendly transport method to complement the natural environment of the Island , installation of a 5kW solar system to recharge the electric vehicle will further benefit the island as excess power generated will feed into the Flinders Island Grid.
The launch of the Flinders Island Clean Green Airport Shuttle - Tasmania 's first Electric Car was at the Flinders Island 77 th Annual Show on the 14th of October 2011. Minister for Climate Change Cassy O'Connor launched the innovative project and encouraged Islanders to embrace renewable energy options.
