Whitemark and the Darling Range – Walkers Hill lookout and walking tracks

Whitemark is the Islands main centre a good place to begin, park down by the Wharf or Boat ramp and walk south to old Nalinga Jetty or further to Ferguson's Jetty. Alternatively walk north to Pat’s River  towards the Airport (there is a map in your folder). Look out for Paper Nautilus between March and June as they wash up on the west coast beaches. Or throw a line in off the Whitemark wharf for squid, garfish and silver Trevally with some squid jigs , blue bait or pilchards on an incoming tide.

With a café and bakery in town call in for some morning tea and perhaps pick something for lunch to take with you. In and around Whitemark there is Bowmans History room and the community Rose Garden both well worth a look or head down to the Sports club at the southern end of the Esplanade for a round of Golf.

For a spot of bird watching drive out of town north to Bluff road, a tidal salt marsh and  a good location to gain a different perspective of Mount Strzelecki. Back to the main road and continue north to Long Point turn off, at the end of the road you will find a tidal bay which attracts many birds and over the sand dunes you will find an exposed beach, good for beachcombing.

From long point head back into town and take the Memana turn off about 7km up the road, turn off to Walkers Hill lookout, the highest peak in the Darling Range and a 360’ panorama of the Island. Walks in the Darling Range are best done with the help of some local knowledge or better yet book a half day Four Wheel Drive tour and see the Range in comfort.

From Walkers Hill drive back to Whitemark and as you approach turn off at School road and head up the hill for a scenic drive where you can gain another perspective of the Darling range. The road continues to Mann’s pit Road where you can gain access to the Pillingers Peak walk.
